Mama’s Weekly Blog

The life and times of a stay at home mom.
I blog about being a mommy, my family, reviews, whatever may be happening.
Musings from the lunatic mind of a stay at home mommy with two small children.

*Discloser: I was not PAID for this review. I was provided with a sample of the product to use and review. This will in no way compromise my ability to be honest.

IMG_0304

You should know that if you use this product your husband will turn into a master chief, at least in his own mind! Your neighbors will become very friendly and your house will automatically be volunteered for any family get together!

You should also know that this is usable in the winter. It may take a bit longer to cook your food, but imagine that Super Bowl party with this!

We decided to cook a variety of things to test it out for the first time. We did a mess of Veggies, (the corn on the cob was unbelievable!) salmon, small brisket, and a huge pork loin. We did all this at once. This smoker has a great capacity. The salmon turned out great. Cooked thru without being dry or tough. The brisket was SOO good. Tender, juicy and full of flavor. The pork loin was perfect. I smoked that one so I could cut it up and freeze it for later dinners. I also opened up a head of garlic and smoked the cloves. I put these in a jar in the refrigerator to use when cooking. The smoked garlic smelled wonderful!

IMG_0298

As you can see from the picture my husband took over with putting it together. He had it all put together and ready to go within 10 minutes. It took longer to put together than the toy box i bought for the kids!

The instructions where very easy to read and understand. Nothing overly complicated and it walks you thru each step. There are also a lot of great recipes in there. If you are intimidated these recipes would be the perfect way to start out.

We used hickory chips for our smoker test. Hickory was the type that seemed to go with most meats according to the instructions. It gives you suggestions for chips according to what you’re cooking. I was amazed that we didn’t have to go to any specialty store for the chips. The grocery store had a ton of different “flavors”.

IMG_0301

This smoker has EVERYTHING. It has a digital timer and damper on the top. The front is a glass window so you can see what you will be feasting on. The cord is long enough without being the way. It also has a meat thermometer. If you smoke more then one meat at a time you will need an extra one as taking the thermometer out while its hot in there isn’t recommended.

To be honest I have never used any other smoker before this, so I can’t say how this one compares, but I can’t imagine there is anything else out there that’s easier or works better!

If you throw a party and use this you will be the Hostess/Host of the YEAR. I can’t wait for Super Bowl.

Not so long ago I posted about how hard of a time I was having with potty training my 3 yr old. You can find it here if you want some back story. Potty Training Hell

So we had a brilliant idea to reward him with something he loves for anytime he uses the big boy potty. We told him that any time he uses the potty we could go to the store and pick out a toy.

I know, I know! Keep in mind that I was desperate and brain wave deprived at the time. I didn’t take into account that the toys he always picks are the expensive ones.

The ploy worked, somewhat, but it soon became apparent that 1) it would become a very expensive potty training tool. and 2) if the toy/reward was not in site he quickly lost interest in using the potty.

SOOOO, NEW PLAN!

I had been looking for a Toy Story Potty Chart but was having a hard time finding one in the U.S.. WEIRD but true. A friend of mine (Thanks Jennifer) on Facebook informed me about the Pull Ups Toy Story Chart that comes with the Toy Story box of Pull Ups. YAY! So we ran out and bought them. The chart is very basic and not really reusable so we didn’t actually use it at all. (I was really looking for a large one that he would get excited about using.) BUT he loved the box it was in! (You know kids, they’d rather play with the box the toy comes in then the toy huh? lol)

This sparked an idea that wouldn’t only save me money, but would hopefully make the incentive to use the potty exciting for him.

We went to Big Lots and bought a lot of small relatively cheap toys. Nothing over 5 bucks actually. Most where 1 dollar! We got cars and parachute Disney characters among other things. I opened them all and filled his Toy Story box with all those toys. I showed it to him and explained that anytime he used the big boy potty he would get to pick any toy he wants out of the treasure box. His excitement was incredible. I put the box on the table in sight and told him he wasn’t allowed to touch it until he used the potty.

Did it work?

Oh yes! Maybe a bit to well! He now asked to use the potty. EVEN IF HE DOESN”T NEED TO GO. He will sit on that thing for an hour and a half before his legs start to hurt or fall asleep and he decides to get off. Most the time he doesn’t even go in that time. He does this a few times a day now.

Bless his heart he’s trying, but I don’t think he quite recognizes that feeling of “need to go” yet. As soon as he gets that down I think I will need to start refilling the treasure box often!

If you want to try this but don’t use Pull Ups just use a regular cardboard box and let your little one decorate it.

You may have noticed the 4 125 X 125 ad spaces under the header. Mommy D’s Kitchen is now officially accepting ads.

How will this effect you? It won’t! Except for the fact that you may see an advertisement that you are interested in and click on it.

A promise to you, my friends:

Mommy D’s Kitchen will ONLY accept 4 ads under the headers at a time. (And I won’t be placing any other ad spaces anywhere else on site.) I don’t want this site to become like so many others out there that are so filled with ads that you have a hard time finding the actual content.

So by all means, click on the ads and take advantage of that information, but don’t worry, this is not going to take over Mommy D’s Kitchen. You will not see anymore then 4 small ads at a time.

For anyone who may be interested in placing an ad here, there is a lot more information under the advertise tab in the menu.

Some basic information for you.

I calculated my price based on page views (40,000+ in July) and real estate. Meaning that because the ads are to be placed directly under the header they are in a prime area to be seen by readers. So I included that in my price. It comes out to be $1.00 per every 1,000 page views. So it works out to $40.00 per month (30 days).

If you would like more information please visit the Advertise Page.

I want to thank all my visitors for coming by and being a part of Mommy D’s Kitchen. If it wasn’t for each and every one of you I wouldn’t be able to make this work! Sure, I’m not going to get rich off 4 ad spaces, but that’s not why I am doing this. I won’t make a lot of money, but I am hopeful that I will make enough to maintain and improve the site and do some great giveaways!

Love to you all!

And now for the GIVEAWAY! (NOW CLOSED!)

THE PLAN

In January my husband has to go to Florida for a week on business. We have decided that we will take the opportunity to make this a family vacation. We will all go down with him and after his business is done we are going to stay in Florida and enjoy a nice vacation with the kids. Looking forward to Universal Studios and Disney World.

I am SO excited. This will be a first on many levels. I have never flown before, neither have the kiddo’s. This will be our first official family vacation, and I have never seen the ocean…I can’t wait for January!

HOW YOU CAN HELP

For us to be able to go and have fun without worrying about money, we need to create a budget and stick to it so we can save enough money to have a great vacation!

I am in need of a Budgeting Crash Course!

I am calling on all of you frugal and money saving guru’s to help me out. In the comments leave me your favorite money saving tips and tricks. I am primarily thinking about groceries and such, but any tips are welcome! If you have a website or you know of a website that has great savings information please feel free to leave the link for me (or anyone else in need of budgeting help)!

I am looking forward to hearing from all of you about how you save money and keep to a budget.

Thank you so much for your help!

Sincerely,

Mommy D and Family

My son is 3 yrs old. He has ALWAYS been a very good kid. Listening and minding really well.

All that has changed! For the past couple weeks he has been a terror! Laughing when yelled at or threatened with time out. Being mean to his sister and the pooooooor pets are terrified of him.

He seems to be going thru a hyper active defiant phase and I would LOVE some tips on ways to get him to calm down.

This post isn’t so much a “let me tell you” post, as it is a “TELL ME HOW” post.

Time out isn’t working, taking away his things doesn’t work, even my “Mommy Look” which used to strike fear into him is just laughed at now! ARGH!

Have you gone thru this? Is this the terrible two’s, just a little late? How do you handle a hyper active, defiant 3 yr old?

Inquiring minds want to know!

PicPocket Books App Giveaway!

The wonderful people at PicPocket Books have offered you all a chance to win 3 apps of your choice!

PicPocket Books has SO many wonderful books to read. Same wonderful pictures as you would see in print, but with so many more features. While I think nothing can replace the print books these app books CERTAINLY have a place in the educational library that all parents use for their children.

Now I am one of the few people who doesn’t have an IPhone, so i can’t review these apps for you, but if I did I would load it up with my sons favorite books. When we are stuck somewhere and he is getting that hyper bored look in his eye I could let him read. And travel would be an awesome use for these. Eliminate the space taken up by the books your child has to read at night by already having them at your finger tips.

Now I want an IPhone!

Okay, so here are the technical requirements.

Currently only IPhone and IPod Touch are supported, but they are working to include other smartphones as well.

Every book comes with the following options: audio narration, automatic page turning, touch-screen interaction and “learn-to-read” functionality in which words are highlighted as they are read aloud and/or can be touched to be heard. We are updating our apps to also include personal recordings and greater interactivity with the text for early readers.

This week we are looking at a positively adorable cookbook. “Our First Year” by Jaclyn Douma.

Now, I am a cookbook junky. In fact I’ve got so many I need to go out and get another bookshelf for the new ones that are laying around without a home!

This cookbook is such a gem. It’s one of those cookbooks that you can actually sit down and read. I LOVE the personal touches she includes through the whole book.

Granted this book is geared towards people who need to cook for two, (I remember how hard it was for me to find recipes that wouldn’t leave us with a fridge full of leftovers!) but you can easily double these recipes and make a family portion. There are also recipes for parties and gatherings.

My only negative is that there are no pictures of the food. I love cookbooks to have pictures. The recipes are so easy and uncomplicated tho, that you can easily see in your minds eye what it should look like.

Some of my favorite features of this book are:

1. The personality of the book. You feel like you are getting to know Jaclyn herself when you read this book.

2. The little secret tips included below many of the recipes. So helpful in making your kitchen experience fun and simple!

3. The diversity of the recipes. You can find everything in here from “How to reheat pizza”, to Chicken Parmigiana!

4. The recipes are uncomplicated and simple to understand. This would be a perfect gift for someone just starting out in the kitchen.

5. The tips in this book are so helpful. I learned many of these things during my first year in the kitchen, but even after 10 years of cooking for my family, I still found useful information that I hadn’t thought of before. Thanks Jaclyn!

6. The shear cuteness of it. Most cookbooks have a decorative cover and back, but this one is artfully decorated throughout the entire book.

7. Budget friendly! If you want to make a recipe from this cookbook, even if you double it for a family portion, you aren’t gonna spend an arm and a leg at the grocery store for items you will never use after this recipe and will go to waste. I LOVE a budget friendly cookbook!

So in conclusion, I really enjoyed this cookbook and I am proud to include it among my collection! I have cookbooks that I hardly ever open, but I have a feeling that this is one I will be using.

AngryMom

It could just be me, but since becoming a mother my fuse is so much shorter when it comes to the stupidity of other people.

The most ANNOYING are the people who are oblivious to anyone else around them. You know exactly what I’m talking about don’t you? Those people who stand in the middle of the isle at the store with their cart, talking on the phone and ignoring the other people who say “Excuse me”. You end up going all the way around to get the the product you need.

Those people who drive thru residential neighborhoods in the middle of the night with their unnecessarily loud stereo thumping.

The neighbor who has a party on a week night and lets their drunken friends make ungodly noise outside all night long, before letting them get behind the wheel and drive home.

The woman at the grocery store who uses the self checkout with TWO FULL carts of food, while people with milk and diapers have to wait on her or get into a long line at the regular check out.

The people who drive 20 miles below the speed limit because they are busy talking on the phone, holding up everyone else and creating a traffic issue.

CrazyMom-main_FullSo, you know what I’m talking about. Why my fuse is so much shorter now then it  was before kids is any ones guess. Maybe because the old fuse is being used up by my kids, so the poor general public gets the short end LOL.

Two recent examples this week.

My son is going thru a phase of HAVING to say “HI” to everyone. He gets very upset if they don’t say hi back. We went thru the drive thru at burger king. We pulled up a bit further then normal so he could see into the window. We rolled down his window and when the woman came to the window with our drinks Davis yelled “HI” and waved like a mad man. The woman looked at him and turned around to get our food.

Okay, I thought maybe she didn’t understand what he was saying. She came back to the window with our food and Davis yelled “Hi Hi Hi Hi” and waved. She looked at him again then looked at us and said, “Would you like any ketchup?” HUH? I’m sorry, but my son is saying “HI” to you and he is visibly upset because you aren’t responding. Throw me a bone and just say HI! Nope, she never said hi even though she saw and heard him.

manners-733798

This happens ALL the time. Why don’t people respond when a child says something to them? Are they afraid to interact with someone else’s children? This is something that has been getting on my nerves SO MUCH lately. I feel bad for him because I have to explain that some people are very rude. He asks why and I have no idea what to say.

Second example happened at the grocery store. I was standing in front of an isle looking for a product. I ALWAYS stand back far enough that if someone needs to get something I’m not blocking them. So I’m standing there holding my 1 yr old who is throwing a fit over some unknown thing. This woman walk right in front of me and stands there casually looking at the products. She was literally inches in front of me. There was NO WAY that she didn’t see me and hear my daughter crying. She just stood there. I said “excuse me” numerous times and she ignored me every time. Didn’t even acknowledge my presence. She finally decided on a product and pulled it off the shelf. Her phone rings, she answers it and starts an incredibly awful conversation about the guy she slept with last night. She stand there inches in front of me now talking on the phone!

l02hu9-b78622765z.120100329164120000gvpng808.1 I finally just pushed my way in front of her and grabbed what I needed. I left quickly because I was afraid I might actually slap her or something.

My question to you is why does it seem that common courtesy and manners have gotten rare? I am vigilant at teaching my children to be respectful of others, have manners and be nice to everyone. Am I the only one who finds this disturbing?

Jul 102010

I was contacted by Kiboomu to do a review and giveaway. I immediately jumped at the chance. Not because they wanted to give me something for free (I didn’t receive anything for this review), but because I have been using Kiboomu to help me educate my son for some time, and I was excited to help get the word out about this awesome resource for your child’s education and entertainment.

First I would like to introduce you to Kiboomu and what they have to offer. Kiboomu is fully loaded. What I mean is that you can find everything there from sheet music to apps. Would you like a song that will be fun for your kids to sing and will teach them how to count? This is the place! Do you want something to help keep you kids busy during that plane ride or long drive? Would you like it to be something not only fun but educational? This is the place.

My son is three years old. He is doing great with his letters and counting. He even does some small number math. Now we are working on writing skills. I use to have 5 or 6 sites bookmarked. Each one had 1 or 2 things that I needed. Most the time I would have to move from site to site printing one thing here and another there. Of course that’s AFTER wading through thousands of links and then wading through sites that have no organization. It would take the better part of my day to get together everything I wanted to find.

I don’t have those site bookmarked anymore. I can go to Kiboomu and find everything in one place. I LOVE their printables. Their site is so well organized that one click can take you to exactly what you want. No sifting thru submenus and dead links.

Visit Kiboomu and check out all the resources available for your kids education! Don’t forget to join the community and leave some feedback. Feedback from parents is ALWAYS helpful and welcomed!

*Disclaimer: This is not a paid review. I was provided with a sample of the product to review. This will in no way compromise or impact the honesty of my review.

I have found my new favorite children’s book. “Percy The Perfectly Imperfect Chicken”.The writing is beautiful. It has a melody to it that makes my son HEAR the words. With many other books he listens for a minute then gets a bit bored. With Percy he was captivated by the words after just the first page. In fact, he took great pleasure in repeating word for word every sentence after I had read it.

The book itself is very kid friendly. The paper is strong, not easily ripped. I can personally testify to this as my 1 yr old was looking thru it and usually after she get a hold of a book its unreadable! The text is large and uncomplicated. Great for early readers or kids that are already pro’s. My son is three and can recognize some words. He had great fun trying to identify the words in this book.

My one year old loves the book because of the pictures. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful. The detail and the colors command attention. The expressions especially in the eyes make it easy for a child to understand the emotion on the story.

Now for the story itself. I believe this book should be read by EVERY child. This would be an especially  great resource for children dealing with a bully issue, whether they are being bullied or are the bully themselves. This book should be in every school and in every child’s bookshelf. The story is such a universal one that kids of all ages and all cultures will be able to identify with Percy. After reading it the first time just to myself I felt that this was such a special story and I was so excited to read it to my son. I wanted to share this with him. I haven’t read a children’s book for some time that made me as excited as him!

My son has 3 books that he MUST read at night before bed. He use to have just two, but he has fallen in love with Percy and now he won’t sleep unless he has heard the story! (Sometimes more then once!)

I STRONGLY recommend this book. If you can’t tell I  love the way my son loves this book. It teaches without being pushy, and your child will fall in love with it just as mine has.

To purchase “Percy The Perfectly Imperfect Chicken” and to read more about it and the many other resources that are available for your children visit:

Also keep an eye out for Murphy. This is the sweetest looking bunny I have ever seen. Murphy is coming soon and I am looking forward to reading it too!
